William John Plunkett, (John Plunkett) of Blossvale, NY, passed away on February 6, 2025, after a short illness.
He was born on July 31, 1946, and is one of five sons of Evelyn (Mary) and Robert (Tom) Plunkett. John attended Rome Free Academy, graduating in 1964.
He is survived by his wife, Linda (Wojcik) and Shawn, both at home in Blossvale, NY, as well as his four brothers, Robert (Utica), Laurence (Rome), David (California) and Gary (Rome).
John was a well-known musician in central New York, who played guitar, and wrote numerous songs which he sang and played with his father, as well as his brothers, and with musical friends. He was in various bands throughout his life, including Hard Times, with his most recent ones being Pie-Eyed in the Sky, Pigeon Post and The Plunkett Brothers.
John was also a long-distance runner, often seen running on the roads near his home, followed by his wife, Linda, on her bicycle. He ran in several Boiler Maker races, many local runs and the Boston Marathon. John was also an avid golfer and loved to play the game with his brothers and friends.
John was a friend to everyone, and often sought out, as his song lyric implies, “friends I never met.” He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A musical tribute will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 5 pm at North Shore Coffee House in Bernhards Bay, NY.
A celebration of life is planned for summer of 2025. Friends are invited to make donations to the Rome Humane Society in John’s memory. Funeral arrangements are with Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.
