Giardino, 96, of Rome, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2023, at Bethany Gardens.He was born May 5, 1926, in Rome, a son of the late Calogero and Nunzia Sorbello Giardina.  He attended Rome schools.  Vincent was united in marriage to the former Angeline Bauco, on October 1, 1949, in Historic Old St. John’s Church in Utica, a blessed marriage of 68 years until her passing in 2018.Vincent grew up helping his father and brothers on the family farm on South James Street.  He enlisted in the United States Army in 1944, 7th Infantry Regiment, and served in the European Theatre where he participated in strategic battles such as the Battle of Colmer Pocket. He was captured crossing the Rhine River and held as a Prisoner of War.  He was liberated by the 63rd Infantry Division.  Among his many medals, Vincent was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge for his service.Vincent worked at Griffiss Air Force Base for 31 years and retired as a supply Systems Analyst for the 416th Supply Squadron.  After retirement, he worked parttime at Rome Cable Corporation.  Vincent’s life was devoted to his family first.  He was an avid reader and history buff and enjoyed an interest in politics and government.  He loved his garden and taking care of the house and yard.Vincent is survived by two daughters, Renee (Frank) Swider, and Katherine Cataldo of Rome; a son, Vincent Jr, (Kenneth Witcher) of Palm Springs, CA; grandchildren, Erik Czyscon, Brett Czyscon, Kyle Czyscon, Matthew (Brittany) Cataldo, and Hayley (Shane) Sullivan; great granddaughter, Scarlett Sullivan; and a sister, Rose Marie Martino.  He was predeceased by his brothers, Salvatore (Florence), Joseph and Santo Giardino.The family wishes to sincerely thank Independence Care, especially Louise Smith, and Bethany Gardens for their care and compassion extended to Vincent.A Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio, will be held on Thursday at 1:00 PM, at the Church of St. John the Baptist Church. Military Honors will be rendered following the funeral mass and burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at Barry Funeral Home, 807 West Chestnut Street, on Thursday from 10 am to 12 noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI).
