Sherman "Rip" A. Stein, age 95, formerly of Marcy, was reunited with his beloved wife, Anne, on June 5, 2026, at the Masonic Care Community.
Sherman was born in Buffalo on July 4, 1930, to the late Hyman and Fannie Stein. In 1950, Sherman and Anne were united in marriage and shared almost 76 years of wedded bliss until her passing just 27 days ago on May 9, 2026. He worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company and later Smith Packing. After retiring, he ran The Sewing Machine Repair Center out of his garage.
Sherman was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rites, a Shriner, and belonged to St. Leo's-St. Ann's Church in Holland Patent. He drove many children from the Utica area to the Shriner's Hospital in Boston.
Sherman is survived by his daughters, Sharon Falvo of Marcy and Sandra Gibbs of Rome; his son, Richard (Tracy) Stein of Floyd; his grandchildren, Bernie (Christianne) Stooks of NC, Brendon Stooks (Eden Lefevre) of Utica, Shannon Gibbs of Rome, Tanya (Kevin) Hallenbake of Waterville, and Sherman Jacob Stein of Floyd; his great-grandchildren, Chandler, Lilly, Ian, Nic, Jon, Grace, Emma and William; and several nieces, nephews and cousins with special acknowledgement of Angela and Gary Givonetti who did so much for Anne and Sherman. He was predeceased by his sister, Roma Inserra and brothers, Philip Stein, Paul Stevens, and Marcus Stein.
Sherman's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the caring staff at Masonic Care Community.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, June 11, from 4 to 6 PM, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Rome.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 12, at 12 PM at St. Leo and St. Ann's Church, Elm Street, Holland Patent. Interment will be in Carr Cemetery, Marcy.
