Rita J. Barry
Rita J. Barry, age 88, of Rome, passed away July 30, 2011, in Rome Memorial Hospital, with her loving family at her side.
She was born December 8, 1922, in Rome, a daughter of Carl and Ellen Tyrrell Schuler, and graduated from the Academy of Holy Names in 1940. Rita was united in marriage to Robert "Mac" Barry, on September 6, 1947, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church; he died April 30, 1993. She was the cafeteria manager at St. Peter's School, retiring in 2004 after 40 years of service. She was a member of St. Peter's Church, the women's auxiliary of American Ukranian Veterans and Men's Club. She was an active volunteer at the Food Bank and the Mission of the Christ Child at St. Peter's Church.
Rita loved playing cards and played 'Pitch" for many years at various clubs and organizations throughout the city. She also thoroughly enjoyed having a beer with her many friends she made over the years. Rita loved her job at St. Peter's School cafeteria and treated the students as though they were her own children and always made the students their favorite lunches.
Rita is survived by two daughters and sons in law, Christine and Timothy Street of Manlius, and Mary Ellen and Kevin Merchant of Rome; a sister and brother in law, Doris and Samuel Donohue of Rome; a sister in law, Joan Weinheimer of Syracuse; a brother in law and sister in law, Quintin and Doris Barry of Rome; grandchildren, Cynthia Street Hensen and husband, Justin of Raleigh, NC, Erin Street Kline and husband, Adam of High Point, NC, Amy Street and fiance´e, James Feldmann of Apex, NC, and Meredith Merchant of Rome; and several nieces and nephews, her many friends of the Tuesday Morning Mission of the Christ Child, dear friend Betty Street and her special neighbor and friend Mary Kay Finocchiaro. She was predeceased by 10 siblings.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:45 AM from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, and at 10:30 am at St. Peter's Church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday 4 to 7 PM.
