Richard Sweet

September 15, 1946 — November 12, 2025

Richard A. Sweet, 79, of Ilion, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, surrounded by his children. His passing was due to health complications related to his service in Vietnam.

Born in Binghamton on September 15, 1946, Richard was the son of the late John Sweet and Lefty & Anna Ashley (née Cheeseman). He graduated high school in 1965 and proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, completing three tours in Vietnam before his honorable discharge in 1969.

Richard spent over 40 years in the automotive industry, primarily with Chevrolet. He was an avid hunter in his younger years and later found joy boating with family on Canadarago Lake, creating cherished memories.

He had a sharp wit and a mischievous streak, always ready with a practical joke to make someone laugh. Richard loved movies, and never passed up a good game of cards or a trip to the casino. His sense of humor, storytelling, and love of life made him a joy to be around.

He is survived by his former wife, Dawn Zitoli (née Sternemann), and their four children: Matt (Deb), Michelle (Ryan), Rebecca (Dan), and Ryan (Rachel); 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, with two more expected; four sisters; and one brother. In recent years, Richard discovered additional family, including two more sisters and two brothers. He was predeceased by his sisters, Darlene and Debbie.

Richard was deeply loved and will be remembered for his loyalty, humor, and enduring friendships-especially with lifelong friends Carlos Perez and Dick Adams.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.
