Raymond A. Smith, age 88, of Rome, passed away March 9, 2010, at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, after a brief illness.
He was born November 16, 1921, in Plattsburgh, the son of Paul R. and Aldia LaMay Smith, and educated in Scranton, PA schools. Ray was united in marriage to the former Helen Palliwade, on August 18, 1945, in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was an electrician at Rome Cable Corp, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Ray proudly served in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Adam Ward during the Battle of Okinawa, during WW II. He was a life member of the Rome Elks Club, Henry P. Smith Post #24, American Legion, Rome VFW Post 2246, and the Fort Stanwix Chapter #20, Disabled American Veterans.
Ray was an avid bowler and golfer. He enjoyed the many good friends he made, and good times he had playing in the Tuesday Senior Men's Golf League at Beaver Creek Gold Course. He also cherished the great fishing trips with his son, Ray, to Northern Vermont, Canada and Florida, for the past 25 years.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Helen; and his son Raymond M. Smith of Windsor, CT. He was predeceased by his daughter Carol Smith in 1998; and a brother John Smith.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at 11:00 AM, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery.
