Patricia Shanley Riedel, lifelong resident of Rome, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025.
Pat was born in Rome on October 11, 1935, the only child of Ralph and Margaret Griffin Shanley. She graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names in 1953.
Pat’s first job was as a carhop at Casey’s Drive-In, where she met her future husband, Dick. They were united in marriage on October 19, 1957, and were inseparable until his passing on January 15, 2012.
Pat went on to become secretary at The Manufacturing at Revere Copper and Brass. Later she worked as a secretary for the Rome City School District. She finished her career as an administrative assistant to multiple school superintendents. After retirement, she was elected to the Board of Education. She served as Board president for several years.
Pat was an avid sports fan. Her favorite teams were RFA Football, Syracuse University, the New York Yankees, the Boston Celtics and the Buffalo Bills.
She was very skilled at knitting and crocheting and produced many beautiful items for her family. She made dolls and won multiple awards for them at the New York State Fair. She was an accomplished pianist and had a beautiful singing voice.
She very much enjoyed her time with her friends at the Doll Club and the Wednesday Morning Club. She was a communicant at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Rome.
Pat is survived by her daughter Dr. Margaret (Douglas) Bailey of Baldwinsville; her son Timothy (Chole) Riedel of Brussels, Belgium; her son John (Jennifer) Riedel of Coventry, Connecticut; and grandchildren Griffin, Zachary, Amber, Vincent, Molly, JP, Emily, Ben and Emma.
Pat’s family wish to thank the dedicated staff at St. Camillus Skilled Nursing Facility for their kindness and care. They also wish to extend their gratitude to John Donahue, Jr., who was a true friend to her for many years.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 11:30 AM at St. Paul’s Church. Burial will be held in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
