Michael A. Szymanski, age, 59, of Rome, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011, in Rome Memorial Hospital.



He was born February 19, 1952, in Cleveland, OH, a son of Edward and Clara Piatrowski Szymanski, and educated in Ohio schools. Michael was united in marriage to the former Cheryl Smith, on August 2, 1978, at the Church of St. John the Baptist. He was employed at American Building Corp., in Westmoreland. He was a member of the Light and Life Free Methodist Church.



Michael proudly served in the United States Air Force for more than 22 years. While stationed at Griffiss AFB, he served with the 49th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, working on F-106 fighter aircraft. He later served with the 77th Bomb Squadron at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota and worked on the B-1 Bomber. He retired from the USAF in 1993, after receiving many service medals and commendations.



Michael is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl; a daughter, Michelle Gloe of Silver City, NM; four sons and daughters in law, Eric and Natalie Campbell of Ottumwa, IA, Michael A, Jr., and Vanessa Szymanski of Roxboro, NC, Joshua and Elisha Szymanski of Rome, and Jason and Megan Szymanski of Rome; and 9 grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers and sisters in law and several nieces and nephews.



The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1:00 PM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.

Burial will be in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Churchville, NY.



Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday 6 to 8 PM.
