Michael D. McNutt, age 82, of Rome, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, at Rome Health, with his loving family by his side.
Michael was born in Kalamazoo, MI on December 29, 1943, to the late Owen and Grace Smith McNutt. He earned his master's degree in management science from SUNY Binghamton in May of 1987. His commitment to service began in 1965 when he enlisted in the NY Army National Guard and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1992 from active-duty service. During his career, he served in various positions including the Brigade Executive Officer, and 1st Brigade 42nd Infantry Division and Recruiting and Retention manager for Headquarters New York Army National Guard. Lieutenant Colonel McNutt also served as the National Chairman of the Recruiting and Retention Advisory Committee and as the Chairman of Area 1 Recruiting and Retention Advisory Committee. On December 31, 1966, he was united in marriage to the former Nancy MacFarland.
Michael was a car enthusiast and had several Corvettes. He also loved playing video poker and traveling and was often seen around his house doing yard work.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; his sons, Michael O. (Laura Neiss) McNutt of Liverpool, NY; and Todd (Karen) McNutt of Kingston, NY; his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Joshua (Lena), and Jacob; and his sister, Barbara (Howard) Gunther. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Laura Greci McNutt.
Michael's funeral with military honors will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 5 PM, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 3 to 5 PM prior to the funeral.
