Kimberly Ann Bates, beloved daughter, sister and aunt, left this world on Tuesday, March 18th, 2025, at the age of 35.
Kim was a New Year’s baby, born on January 1st, 1990, in Rome, the daughter of Patricia and Thomas Bates. She graduated from Rome Free Academy in 2008 and went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations from SUNY Oswego in 2012 where she was also a member of the Omicron Xi sorority. Since graduation, Kim lived in the New York City area, with a pause in 2017 and 2018 to embark on a cross-country road trip with her former partner, John Vorees, and their fur-baby Ruca. She had a keen curiosity about the world and took great pleasure in any opportunity to meet and befriend new people.
Although she devoted herself to building a successful career in media and marketing, Kim’s true passion was creating art in various forms including home decor, candles, painting, woodworking, and furniture. She was self-taught in these endeavors and her natural talent made the world a more beautiful place to be both physically and spiritually. Kim was a kind and loving aunt to her two nieces, Avery and Lucy, and three nephews, Samson, Ridge and Tanner. Her bright eyes and broad smile will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Kim is survived by her parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Kaitlin and Santino Calabresi; brother and sister-in-law, Richard Luke and Jennifer Schaub; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Donald and Geraldine Smith; her paternal grandparents, Merle and Dorothy Bates; uncle, Neil Smith; aunt, Jacqueline Smith; and former partner, John Vorees.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 11 AM, at St. Peter's Church, Rome. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on March 31, from 3 to 6 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a donation to the Humane Society of Rome.
