Joseph E. Lolo, age 89, of Acworth, Georgia, and formerly of Bedford Street. Rome, passed away June 17, 2009, in Georgia, after a long illness.



He was born May 27, 1920 in Niagara Falls, a son of Michael and Dorothy Maruszak Lolo, and resided in Rome since 1921. He attended Rome schools and graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College and Utica College of Syracuse University. Joe was united in marriage to the former Sophie Kicak, on October 5, 1946, in Rome. He served as Rome City Clerk for 13 years, and later as Business Administrator of the New York State School for the Deaf, for 19 years until his retirement on February 1, 1976. He was a member and communicant of the Church of the Transfiguration.



Joe served on many community service boards. He was past president of the Rome Optimist Club and the Rome Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. He also served as first Commander of the Frank J. Steczko Post. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Rome Elks Club, Frank J. Steczko Post, Rome Polish Home, Rome Polish Independent Club and Rome Post #2246, VFW. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II, which included overseas service in the African, Sicilian and Italian Theatres of Operation. He was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, Good Conduct Medal and Letter of Commendation. He also received many certificate awards; the Citizenship Award of Rome, Honorary Membership International Association of Municipal Clerks, Barbershopper of the Year Award in 1965 and Outstanding Leadership Award as Optimist Club President in 1970-71.



Joe also served as Trustee of the Executive Board of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and served on the Executive Board of the New York state Association of City and Village Clerks.



Joe is survived by two sons, Dr. William J. Lolo of San Marcos, CA, and Robert E. Lolo of Acworth, GA; three sisters and a brother in law, Edna Melancon of New York Mills, Josephine Finn of Rome, and Caroline and George Sadlik of Whitesboro; a brother, Frank M. Lolo of Orangevale, CA; and a sister in law, Frances Lolo of Rome. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen and brother, Stephen.



Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:45 AM from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, and at 10:30 AM at the Church of the Transfiguration. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.



Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Monday 4 to 7 PM.



Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Transfiguration Memorial Fund or CNY Parkinson's Support Group.
