John E Edmondson, age 93, passed away peacefully in his home on March 3, 2026.
Born in the Bronx on May 20, 1932, John was the son of the late Arlis and Mary (Munnelly) Edmondson, and one of eight children. He attended St Rita's Grammar School, then graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1950. He joined the US Army and served in Korea during the Korean War.
When John returned to New York from Korea, he met Elizabeth Liz" Kelly. John and Liz were married on December 23, 1956. Together, John and Liz raised her two children, James Boyan and Carmel Sullivan. John and Liz were married for 54 years when Liz passed in 2010.
John was a Lieutenant in the New York City Police Department for 24 years, and later Director of Public Safety at SUNY Oneonta. John received his bachelor's degree from Fordham University in 1975 and a Master of Public Administration from C.W. Post College in 1977. He retired in 1992, and he and Liz moved to Rome in 1997.
John's faith was central to his life. He served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and member of the Parish Counsel of St Paul's Catholic Church in Rome, N.Y.
John was predeceased by his wife, Liz; his parents; his seven siblings; and his stepdaughter, Carmel Sullivan of Rome. He is survived by his stepson and daughter-in-law, James and Diane Boyan of New Milford, Connecticut, and her son Daniel Warner of Scottsdale, Arizona. John was a role model for his two grandsons and their wives and families, Timothy and Erin Sullivan, and Terence and Kristin Sullivan, and six great grandchildren, John Sullivan, James Sullivan, Kate Sullivan, Maggie Sullivan, Eamon Sullivan, and Connor Sullivan.
The family wishes to acknowledge Barbara Thomas for her continued friendship and assistance to John. We are most appreciative.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, at St. Paul's Church at 11 AM with military honors to follow. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 10 to 11 AM at the church prior to the mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to Priest of the Sacred Heart, PO Box 900, Hales Corners, WI 53130 in honor of John Edmondson.
