In Loving Memory of John Contini
January 22, 1948 - July 17, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Contini, who touched the lives of many through his quiet presence and gentle spirit, on July 17, 2026.
John became a cherished member of the West South Ira home on March 3, 2020, where he was welcomed into a caring family of housemates and dedicated staff. Throughout his years there, John was surrounded by people who were committed to ensuring he was treated with dignity, compassion, and respect every day.
Though John communicated in his own unique way, those who knew him understood that even the smallest moments-a familiar voice, comforting music, a favorite routine, or simply sitting beside him-could bring him comfort. His life served as a reminder that every person leaves an imprint on the hearts of those around them.
John's journey was one marked by strength and perseverance. He faced life's challenges with quiet resilience and became an important part of the West South Ira family. The relationships formed with his caregivers and those who shared in his daily life created memories that will not be forgotten.
John will be remembered for the lessons he taught about patience, compassion, unconditional care, and the importance of celebrating every individual for who they are.
He leaves behind the many staff members, nurses, clinicians, administrators, and friends within the OPWDD community whose lives were enriched by knowing him. While his absence will be deeply felt, the kindness shown to him and the memories shared with him will remain forever in the hearts of those who cared for him.
May John now find peace, comfort, and eternal rest.
"Those we have cared for never truly leave us. They remain forever in the compassion they inspired and the love they received."
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Thursday, July 23, from 10-11 AM, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Rome. A service will follow the visitation. His body will then be laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery, Town of Lee.
