Jerome Aloysius McCarthy

Jerry McCarthy passed away unexpectedly at home on May 21st 2016.
Born in Rome, NY on September 25, 1930, he was the son of the late Daniel E. and Hazel Barrett McCarthy. On July 9, 1960, he married Dora Marie Lathers in St. Paul's Church in Whitesboro. He attended St. Aloysius Academy and was a graduate of Canton College. An army veteran, he served with the third infantry division in Korea where he was awarded two bronze battle stars. Jerry was Secretary-Treasurer of Canterbury Press in Rome, retiring in 1991 after 35 years of dedicated employment. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Lake Delta Yacht Club. He had been active in many civic organizations and had a great love of the community.
Jerry was especially proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them excel in hockey, ballet, cooking and college. His passion for life included annual extended vacations to Anna Maria Island, Florida, which he enjoyed immensely with his family and friends. His infectious smile brightened every room he entered.
Surviving are his loving wife Dora of 55 years, and his children (and spouses) Joseph and Patricia McCarthy, Judy Sigg, James and Jill McCarthy, Jeanne Portner and family friend "Joe" P. E. Sigg. He is also survived by his grandchildren, William, Timothy, Katey and Rose Portner, 2d Lt James Sigg, and Lauren and Daniel McCarthy. In addition, he also leaves his nieces and nephews and many family friends. He was predeceased by a brother, William E. McCarthy and sister, Jeanne N. Yager.
A celebratory mass of Jerry's life will be held on Wednesday, May 25th at St. Joseph's Church in Lee Center at 11 AM. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Taberg.
At Jerry's request, there will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Lake Delta Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 596, Rome, NY 13442-0596.
