James (Jim) H. Baker, 88, of Vancouver, Washington, formerly of Rome, passed away on February 11, 2010 at Fort Vancouver Convalescent Center where he resided since July of 2008.



Jim was born Dec. 9, 1921 in Pulaski, NY. He was the son of Fred and Edna Jones Baker. He was educated in Sandy Creek schools. Jim was united in marriage to Margaret M. Larkin in 1947 in Fulton, New York. He retired from Griffiss Air Force Base in 1975 as superintendent of the SAC and central power steam plants. He was also employed as a tool and die maker at Kirk Engineering Company for over 35 years.



Jim was a veteran of WWII U.S. Third Army, serving under General George Patton, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in the European Theater.



He was an avid hunter in northern New York State as well as many western states and Canada. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and was well known for his stock making talent and woodworking skills.



Jim was preceded in death by wife, Margaret, in 2008, and brother, Charles, in 1979. Surviving is his sister, Sally Bolyard of Wenatchee, Washington, two sons, Michael and wife Karen of Vancouver, Dan and wife Marianne of Whitesboro, Grandchildren Sarah and David of Vancouver, WA, Anna of Sydney, Australia and James of Whitesboro.



The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 8:00 PM at Barry Funeral Home, 807 West Chestnut Street. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Sandy Creek, New York in the spring.
