Helene Winifred Lawrence Sleszynski, age 94, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2001, after a long battle with cancer and with her loving family at her side.
She was born April 25, 1917, in Piseco, a daughter of the late Thomas and Daisy Courtney Lawrence. She was the valedictorian of her high school class in Wells, NY, and graduated from business school in 1937. After the beginning of World War II, and for 10 years thereafter, she was employed by the Federal government in Washington, DC, as well as several other locations. Helene was united in marriage with Alfred F. Sleszynski on April 16, 1948, a marriage that lasted 61 years until Al's passing on May 3, 2009. She also was employed by Oneida County and served in various capacities; retiring as Deputy County Clerk in 1985. Upon her retirement, she received Meritorious Service Awards from the New York State Assembly, County of Oneida and the City of Utica.
Helene was a loving, kind, generous and faithful person. She was a member of the Maynard Methodist Church and former Secretary and Trustee of the Church
Helene is survived by two sons and daughters in law, Darryl and Cheryl (Pinti) Sleszynski of Rome, and Neal and Sandra Sleszynski of Philomath, OR; grandchildren Dominic and Brian Sleszynski, Katherine and Troy Hoffman and Cynthia Sleszynski, great grandchildren, Athena and Ares; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 6:30 PM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be in Carr Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Friday 4 to 6:30 PM, prior to the funeral service.
