George W. Hickey, age 90, of Mountain House, CA and formerly of Rome, passed away peacefully at home on February 12, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
George was born in Rome on September 19, 1926 to the late William Sr. and Adella Brown Hickey, and educated in the Rome Schools. He proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Army. He was a mailman for the US Postal Service for almost 30 years. He was united in marriage to the former Nancy Trophia on August 29, 1953 at the Church of St. John the Baptist; a blessed union of 56 years until her passing on October 11, 2009.
George is survived his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Mike McCombs of Mountain House, CA; his grandchildren, Eric, Ryan, and Caitlin; his sister, Dorothy Utnik of Rome; his sister in laws, Freida Hickey, Patricia Trophia, Christine Trophia. He was predeceased by his brother, William Hickey, Jr.; by brother in laws Anthony and Sam Trophia, and Hank Utnik of Rome.
George was a lifetime member of both the Rome VFW and American Legion, where he spent much of his time enjoying a couple drinks with other veterans. He was an avid baseball fan and he personally enjoyed numerous hours of watching the New York Yankees, but would also enjoy watching any game that was being played. He not only enjoyed watching baseball, but also playing in his free time. He was very proud being able to serve as a ball boy for the 1939 Rome Colonels.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 11 AM, at the Church of St. John the Baptist, with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Rome Cemetery.
