Gary R. Schrader, age 69, of Rome, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2017 at Rome Memorial Hospital.



Gary was born in Olney, Ill. on September 12, 1947 to the late Kenneth and Neva Walker Schrader. Upon graduating from high school, Gary enlisted into the armed services. As a member of the U.S. Air Force, he served in S. E. Asia and Europe for nearly 20 years. He retired with the rank of MSgt after 24 years of honorable service. On July 8, 1972, in Norfolk, England, he was united in marriage to Philippa Edney.



Gary had a unique sense of humor and could make almost anyone laugh. He enjoyed history and was a Civil War buff. He also collected coins, pigs, and many obscure flags. He was a loving brother, father, grandfather and husband.



Gary is survived by Philippa, his loving wife of nearly 45 years; a daughter and son in law, Cassandra and Aaron Wilson of Buda, TX; a son and daughter in law, Matthew and Irene Schrader of Rome; three grandchildren, Mark Schrader, Kevin and Natalie Wilson; a sister and brother in law, Barbara and Patrick Smith; nieces and nephews, Doug and Jessie Smith, Tricia and Phil Becker, and Andy and Lenore Smith; and four great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Philip.



A Celebration of Gary's life will be held on Saturday at The Oak and Ivy Bed & Breakfast, 600 N. George Street, Rome, from 2 until 6 p.m. Military honors will be rendered at 3 PM.



Burial will be at the convenience of the family.



In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
