Frank H. Nelson, age 98, of Rome, NY, and formerly of Orangeburg, NY, for over 60 years, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, at Rome Health, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family, faith, and country.
Born in Middlesboro, Kentucky on October 14, 1926, to Bruce and Florence Hess Nelson, Frank was one of four children and cherished the bond he shared with his sister Florence and brothers Bruce Jr. and Page. He often recalled joyful stories from his childhood, delighting his family with memories of a time once lived. A natural athlete, Frank was a talented diver in high school, proudly winning the state championship. Following high school, Frank continued his education at West Virginia University, earning his bachelor’s degree. A proud patriot, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Topeka, a Cleveland-Class Light Cruiser, demonstrating the same dedication and humility that defined every stage of his life.
On November 26, 1950, during a rare winter snowstorm, Frank married the love of his life, Mary Agnes “Aggie” Killeen. With determination and a Coca-Cola truck, Aggie made it to the church, and together, they began a journey that would span more than seven decades. They made their home in Orangeburg, affectionately known as New York City's “sixth borough”, where they raised their two children and served faithfully at St. Catherine’s Parish. Frank was a devoted member of the church choir for over 50 years, finding joy and peace in music.
Frank spent much of his professional life in business administration with Kelly Services, commuting into New York City and working at the iconic Chrysler Building. He relished taking his children into the city, sharing pretzels from street carts, attending shows and ice skating- traditions and memories that continued with his grandchildren.
In retirement, Frank and Aggie embraced their love of travel, exploring the world together on cruises that brought them lasting memories and deepened their bond. He was an avid golfer and, at the age of 85, achieved his first hole-in-one. His zeal for golf continued off of the course; if it wasn't golf on television, a Yankee's game was sure to be on! At 95, Frank attended a Mets game at Citi Field with his two great-children with whom he shared a special bond. His humor and patience indulging their Mets fandom despite being a Yankees fan at heart were matched. Frank was a man who embraced life fully.
Frank was predeceased by his beloved wife Aggie in 2021, his son-in-law Merritt Boucher, his sister Florence Crawford, and brothers Bruce Jr. and Page Nelson. He is survived by his devoted daughter Mary Anne Boucher of Rome; his son Frank (Paula) Nelson Jr. of Venice, FL; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Church in Rome. Military honors will follow the Mass. Frank will be laid to rest beside his beloved Aggie at Frederick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spring Valley, NY.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.
