Evelyn B. Schafer, 90, of Stearns Road and formerly of Elmer Hill Road, passed away at the home of her niece and husband, Marlene and Earl Matt, on Saturday, July 4, 2009, after a long illness.



She was born January 16, 1919, in Ava, a daughter of Earl F. and Ella Gleasman Hofferd, and educated in Verona schools. Evelyn was united in marriage Luke Clayton Schafer on June 1, 1938, in Verona; he died January 26, 1992. She formerly worked at Rome Cable, Varflex and later at the Rome Sentinel. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Henry P. Smith Post #24, American Legion Auxiliary, South Rome Seniors, Floyd Seniors, former member of Lake Delta Fire Department Auxiliary, Delta Lake Association and former member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Altar Guild and Young Ladies Society and Westernville Seniors.



Evelyn and her husband, Luke Clayton, built their home on Elmer Hill Road and enjoyed 55 years of their lives there. She loved playing cards with her friends at the Senior Centers, NASCAR racing and many years of enjoying American Legion baseball. Evelyn truly loved her family and dedicated much of her life to helping anyone in need. She had many great friends and neighbors, including Jim and Blanche Brewer, Millie Fletcher, Darlene Cote, and Dick and Bev Blount; and predeceased by a good friend, Bill Peal.



Evelyn is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Boiko of Rome; grandchildren, Nancy Clance and Luke Boiko; great grandchildren, Kayla, Marie and Dacoda L. Clance; several nieces and nephews, including Marlene Matt and William S. Davis, Jr., who resided with her and Luke Clayton, in earlier years, Bill Davis, Ray Hryckewicz, Dick Rapke, Joan Nellenbach, Roger Rapke, Warren Hryckewicz, and John Stedman; and several great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews She was predeceased by two sisters, Evaneta Stedman and Lydia J. Rapke; and a nephew Edward J. Hammond , whom also resided with her.



The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:00 AM at Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Town of Kirkland.



Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM.



Memorial contributions may be made to the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department.
