Obituary

Ella Marie (Howell) Alsheimer, 67, of Rome, passed away on April 8, 2026, at Bethany Gardens Rehabilitation Center.

Ella was born May 20, 1958, in Elmira, New York, the daughter of the late Carl Edward Howell and Margaret Theresa (Meyers) Howell. She was educated at Southside High School in Elmira, received her bachelor's at Elmira College, and her master's at Ithaca College before beginning a thirty-year career as a speech pathologist for the New York State Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). Ella's generous service was enjoyed by many throughout her professional career, service that extended to her many volunteer activities.

She was a devoted member of Delta United Methodist Church, serving in almost every area of ministry there is and as a certified lay leader modeled the example of the one she served in life. She was also more than willing to lend a hand to help her furry friends (felines especially) through many years of volunteer work with the Rome Humane Society. Her service was also deeply felt at the Rome Community Theater, where she volunteered for more than twenty years, nearly ten of which included service on the board and as the Second Vice President, organizing social events and volunteer opportunities while also proving instrumental in preserving the history of the organization. She was recognized with the organization's Nora Burke Award for her superior service. At the time of her passing, Ella was the current regent of the Fort Stanwix Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she was a member for several years beforehand, and a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O). In all these areas of service and more, she proved to be selfless, kind, and understanding to all.

Ella was an avid reader and participated in Jervis Library book clubs. She was involved in many social groups and loved playing cards and other games with her friends.

Ella is predeceased by her husband Ambrose Howard Alsheimer. They were united in marriage from 1988 until his death in 2001. She leaves behind five cats who meant a great deal to her, cousins and many special friends who will miss her dearly, but all of whom are secure in the fact that she is now in her eternal home.

A memorial service will be held at Delta United Methodist Church, 6285 Hawkins Corners Road, Rome, NY 13440, on Friday, May 1 at 2:00 PM, where all who knew and loved her are welcome to gather to celebrate her life.

Donations in Ella's memory can be made to the charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Rome.
