Eleanor B. Hartson, 97, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford. She was born in Ava on September 16, 1913 the daughter of Seymour and Etta Tuthill Barringer. She graduated from Boonville High School in 1930 and completed a teaching degree from the State University of New York at Cortland.
Eleanor was united in a lifelong marriage to Harry Hartson on July 23, 1936 at the Ava Methodist Church. Shortly after their marriage they moved onto the Hartson homestead and farm on Beartown Road in Ava. Mr. Hartson passed away November 24, 2004.
Mrs. Hartson began her teaching career in the Town of Ava and later taught in the Town of Western and Town of Forestport. Her love of teaching brought her to Rome where she taught in the Rome City School District until her retirement in June 1974.
Eleanor was a member of the Lee Center Methodist Church, Lee United Senior Citizens, Retired Teachers Association and the Lee Center United Methodist Women's Group.
Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Yocum of Floyd; nine grandchildren, James Yocum, Floyd; Sandra Yocum, Marcy; Thomas (Laura) Yocum, Marcy; Kathleen (John) Theall, Rome; David (Bernadette) Flint, Andrea Weeks, Theresa (James) Webster, William (Lori) Flint, Robert (Carrie) Flint; all of Ava, fourteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter Shirley Flint; great- granddaughter, Ashley Webster; sons-in-law Ronald Flint and Clarence Yocum.
Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut St. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday 2-7 p.m.
