Edwin "Ed" D. Gwyther, LMSW, age 51, of Rome, passed away June 10, 2013, at Rome Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born November 12, 1961, in Rome, a son of Edwin T. Mary Ann Barone Gwyther. He graduated from Rome Catholic High School, earned an Associate's Degree from MVCC and Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Sociology from Syracuse University. Ed was a dedicated social worker at the Neighborhood Center in Rome, and formally worked at the VA Clinic in Rome and Catholic Charities. He also was a former part-time instructor at MVCC. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Goldsborough, and received the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Navy Expeditionary Medal. He was an active member of the Wickwire Brook Sportsman Club.
Ed is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Kimmel; a daughter, Samantha and grandson, Logan Darling; a sister and brother in law, Helen and Raymond Puma of Rome; two brothers and a sister in law, Paul and Gloria Gwyther of Fairfax, VA, and Thomas Gwyther of Whitesboro; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Edwin T. Gwyther.
Funeral services with Military Honors will be held Saturday at 12:45 PM from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, and a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 PM at St. Peter's Church. Burial will be in Saratoga National Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Friday 4 to 7 PM.
