Edward A. McCaffrey, age 82, of Rome, passed away February 28, 2011, at home, after a long illness.



He was born September 25, 1928, in New York City, a son of Edward J. and Charlotte Werner McCaffrey. Ed was united in marriage to the former Nancy O'Neil, on November 7, 1953, in Watertown, New York. He was a registered nurse and served as a supervisor at the CNYDSO in Rome, retiring years ago. He was a member of St. Peter's Church. Ed proudly served in the U.S. Army at the end of WW II and was later recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He was a former member of Henry P. Smith Post, American Legion and the Rome Post, VFW.



Ed lived for over 20 years, with Parkinson's Disease. His disability never deterred his will or desire to help others. He, along with his wife Nancy, lectured on behalf of, and supported programs offered to people stricken with Parkinson' Disease, and their families. Ed enjoyed reading and writing poetry. He found great comfort and peace in writing poetry and had a great number of his works published.



Ed is survived by his loving and caring wife, Nancy; a son and daughter in law, John and Tracie McCaffrey of Liverpool; two sisters and a brother in law, Marjorie and Joseph Sears of Ogdensburg, and Lucille Sheppard of Liverpool; a brother and sister in law, Thomas and Mary Rose McCaffrey of Ogdensburg; two cherished grandchildren, Stepfanie and Matthew McCaffrey; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Kevin McCaffrey in 1957.



Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:15 AM from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, and at 11:00 AM at St. Peter's Church. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown.



Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Wednesday 4 to 7 PM.



Memorial contributions may be made to the CNY Parkinson's Support Group or the Presbyterian Home of CNY.
