Donald E. Geary, age 89, of Palm City, FL, and formerly of Rome, NY, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2015, at Martin Memorial Hospital, Stuart, Florida with his family at his side.
He was born on July 10, 1926 in New Haven, CT, the son of Harold and Eleanor Geary. He graduated from Hamden High School in Hamden, CT. and later went on to attain a Master's Degree in teaching from A.I.C. College in Springfield, MA. Donald was predeceased by his wife of 26 years Helen J. (Prozny) Geary in 1986. He later married Catherine Milone of Bay Shore, NY in 1989 and moved to Florida to enjoy his retirement.
Donald is survived by his wife, Catherine; his three children, Anne M. Geary of Lebanon, NY, Donald T. Geary of Hebron, CT, Lee N. Morgan and her husband Howard of Lockport, NY; step-children, Joseph and Florence Milone of Rockville Center, NY, William and Cathy Milone of Henderson, NV, Joan Connolly of St. Augustine, FL, and Mary Anne Milone of Miami, FL; and five grandchildren Matthew, Alison, Melissa, Jason and Melanie; a sister, Eleanor, and brother, Harold; 16 step-grandchildren and 9 step great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Russell, and a step-son, Dominick Milone.
He was a retired school teacher with 26 years of service with the Rome City School District and later, 15 years with the International Paper Company in product sales. Donald was a two-sport star athlete in high school and college, and was a member of the 1948 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team which won the bronze medal. Donald was also an avid golfer and was a city golf champion eight times.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 1, 2015, at 10:00 AM from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, and a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, at the Church of the Transfiguration. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery
