USAF Col. retired Bernard L. Miller, age 86, of Rome, New York, died August 17, 2009 at Rome Memorial Hospital Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Col. Miller was born September 12, 1922, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Col. Miller spent 37 Years in the Military services of his county, retiring in 1982 at Griffiss AGB. He served during World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Berlin Crisis, the Cuban Crisis, and the Vietnam Conflict.



Among his many medals and awards were the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 battle stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Legion of Merit Medal and the Philippines Liberation Medal with 2 battle stars.



Col. Miller was active in the local and state chapters of The Retired Officers Association, St. Thomas More, and Griffiss AFB Chapel. He was past president of Rome Rotary Club and a Paul P. Harris Fellow, a member of the American Legion, and a charter member of the Old Forge VFW, He was also a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Rome.



Surviving Col. Miller are his beloved wife of 60 years, D. Vernette Miller; a son and daughter-in-law, David Miller and Vera Golenzer of Vienna, VA; a daughter, Bernette Ryan of Eagan, MN; a daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Steven McAteer of Imperial, PA; and a daughter and son-in-law, Janette and Douglas Arvidson of Camden, NY 13 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.



Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:45 AM from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street and 10:30 AM at St. Peter's Church. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.



Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
