Barbara A. (Gurley) Loso, age 89, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025, at the Wynn Hospital.
Barbara was born on December 23, 1935, to Maurice D. and Anna B. Schweitzer Gurley, in Rome. She attended Academy of Holy Names, graduating in 1953. Upon graduation she worked for Revere as a bookkeeper. On July 30, 1955, she was united in marriage to her one and only love, Robert R. Loso, in St Peter’s Church, a union that would last for 50 years until his death in 2005. After raising five children, she then went to work for Goldberg’s accounting department, then Dept. of the Interior at Fort Stanwix Monument, Farmers Home Administration, 49th FIS, 416th BMW accounting and payroll, then retired From Rome Laboratory Civilian Pay office in 1999. She loved working with numbers, and her jobs came easy for her.
As a child, she was an accomplished pianist. She liked to reminisce about how she entertained Dr. Sanders at his dinner parties and for other special occasions. Raising five children was a heavy load, but she still found time to be a Den Mother, participate in charitable activities, and attend all school functions for all those kids. She was our Pre-k teacher, miss manners teacher, and life coach, and found time to give each of her children her loving attention.
She was a communicant of St Peter’s Church, where she had been a member of the Altar Rosary Society, and the choir. She was a member of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, something that was very dear to her heart. She also was a social member at The American Ukrainian Veterans and Men’s Club, and the Rome VFW.
She had that laugh that made everyone smile and laugh along with her. Mom was a very special loving and caring Lady, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her, or more likely, laughed with her.
Barbara is survived by her children, Michael D. Loso, Timothy R. (Lillian) Loso, Patrick J Loso, Laura T. (Neil) Mahoney, and Robert C. Loso; cherished grandchildren, Melissa (Lance) DeCarlo, Ethan Chance, Barbara Catherine Loso, Tricia (Tucker) Bushway, and Anna Loso; several nieces and nephews especially a special niece, Jennifer Gurley (Allen Scott) Phillips. Barbara is predeceased by her parents; a sister, Lucille T. Kovacik; and brother, Maurice D. “Moe” Gurley Jr.
Barbara wanted to thank all of her special friends, and staff, who made life so enjoyable where she lived, for the last several years at Brookdale of Clinton. Also, the family would like to thank the kind, caring, and very patient, staff at Wynn Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11 AM. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
