Alfred "Al" J. Koenig, age 56, of the Town of Western, passed away unexpectedly on February 24, 2026, at Rome Health.
Al was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 27. 1969, to the late Herman and Marianne Jacoby Koenig. He graduated from Delaware Academy and Central Schools in 1988 and earned an associate's degree in mechanical drafting from SUNY Delhi and an associate's degree in nursing from St. Elizabeth's College of Nursing. On October 15, 1994, he was united in marriage to the former Mira Hansen whom he met while the two of them were attending SUNY Delhi. Al began his nursing career at St. Elizabeth's Hospital and then spent the majority at Rome Health. He recently started working at Oneida Medical.
Al had a large circle of friends. He and several close friends would venture up to North Lake for their annual camping trip which they referred to as Moose Patrol. He was a World War II history buff and had a large collection of models from that era.
Al is survived by his loving wife, Mira; their cats, Jack and Ace; his mother-in-law, Marj (Fred) Myers; sister-in-law, Lisa (Shawn) VanHorn; and many good friends and co-workers. He was predeceased by his sisters, Linda Koenig and Cecelia Koenig.
Al's celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 12 PM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Rome, NY. Burial will take place at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Delhi, NY.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 10 AM to 12 PM prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023.
