My best friend and supporter, my mom, passed away on May 30, 2025.
Mary Elizabeth Hardies Neidl was born in Rochester, on June 30, 1947, the daughter of Willard and Marie Hardies. She grew up in Rochester, a few years in Utica, and graduated high school in 1965. Mom went on to Utica College of Syracuse University majoring in English. After receiving her degree in 1969, Mom began teaching in Rome at Harvey E. Alter. She spent many years there until its closing. From there, she worked at Clough Elementary and finished her career of 33 years at Denti.
Mary and her former husband, David, welcomed their son, Chad, on February 1 6, 1983. Mom was an inspiring teacher who loved theater and music. Often, she traveled to “The Big Apple” for Broadway musicals. While in Utica, she often took roles in the theater league where her song and dance routines brought joy and laughter. This background was instrumental in making her production of “Charlie Brown” at Alter a rousing success. Her creative spirit transferred into classrooms. Curriculum was transformed into interesting projects engaging students every day.
Mom was known for her humor. She loved comedy and spontaneously erupted with a witty phrase or two. She also loved beautiful purses and well-appointed clothing. Never a day would pass without Mom shopping whether it be at Walgreens, Price Chopper, Marshalls or a woman’s clothing store. She regaled those in the hair salon. Jan looked forward to her appointments because she knew Mom would be an uplifting spirit in a long day.
In later years, Mom adopted her landlady, Isabel, as a substitute mother and friend. They would sit watching “Dancing with the Stars” or ‘The Bachelor” every week while munching on popcorn. Her other favorites were “Family Feud.” “The Weather Channel,” the Hallmark Channel and old movies.
She is survived by her son, Chad; her former husband David; her sisters-in-law, Pat, Nancy, and Robin; and several cousins. Twelve years ago, she adopted a little Yorkie, Lexi, who became her constant companion. Sometimes Lexi would go shopping with her or just for a ride. She loved animals, especially dogs. She greatly missed Buffy and Darcy.
Special thanks to Joan for her assistance with Mom (especially the last few years), and to llene who has been a part of Mary’s life for decades.
Please consider donations to the Humane Society of Rome or the RTA Children’s Fund.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
