James Peter Martin

June 30, 1942 — February 12, 2025

James Peter Martin, a beloved resident of Rome, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, at the age of 82, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on June 30, 1942, in Utica, the son of the late Wallace and M. Antoinnette (Belanger) Martin. On November 9, 1963, he married the former Diana Testa. Together, they shared 61 wonderful years of marriage.

James graduated from St. Francis DeSales School. As a youth, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and he carried the values of integrity and service throughout his life. He worked as an Insurance Agent at Nationwide for 44 years.

James was an active member and Elder of the Church of Christ in Utica, where he held regular Bible studies at his home and deeply cherished his church family. He was also involved with the Christian Motorcycle Association, where he blended his love for motorcycles with his faith. He formed lasting friendships through this organization and proudly served as Road Captain for the “Run for the Son.”

James had a passion for life and a wide array of interests. He was an avid sailor, finding peace on the water, and held a deep appreciation for sailboats. He was also a Commander in the U.S. Power Squadron.

A true car enthusiast, James had a special affection for his 1989 Ford Thunderbird, which he lovingly referred to as his "baby." Known for his mechanical skills, he took great pride in maintaining his vehicles. Photography was another passion of James', and he enjoyed capturing the beauty of the world through his lens. He was also an active member of the National Rifle Association and part of a Barbershop Quartet for 10 years. James had a special bond with his cats, who were his constant companions and brought him immense joy.

James is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Diana; his sisters, Karen Holland and Mary Rose (John) Schorer; his sisters-in-law, Linda DeSantis and Carole Dapice; several nieces and nephews, especially Stacey and Ted Borek, Megan Kashman, Lisa and Larry Crossett, Laken and Victor Falcon, Rocco Dapice, Mandy and Jonathan VanDyke; as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He shared a particularly close relationship with his godchild, Jackie Cruz, and her children, Artemis and Apollo.

James is now reunited in Heaven with his beautiful daughter, Renee, who predeceased him in 1990, and his brother-in-law, Louis DeSantis.

A special thank you is extended to Dr. Toby Taylor for his compassionate care and support.

James’ funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 22, at 5:00 PM at Barry Funeral Home, located at 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, prior to the service, to pay their respects and celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in James' memory to Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413, an organization that provided comfort and support during his final days.
