William D. Gilbert
Rome
William D. Gilbert, age 60, of Rome, passed away April 10, 2011, at Rome Memorial Hospital, with his loving family at his side.
He was born April 3, 1951, in Barneveld, a son of William and Joan Pape Gilbert, and was educated in Holland Patent Schools. William was united in marriage to the former Arlene Jones on January 1, 1980, in Floyd, NY. He was a truck driver and drove for various trucking companies and most recently for Jones Motors of Buffalo. He proudly served our Country in the United States Marines Corps.
William Gilbert "WD" was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother- in-law, son- in-law and uncle. Most of all, he was a friend to everyone who was lucky enough to have known him. If you knew William, you knew how it felt to have someone that would literally take the shirt off his back for you anytime, anyplace. He always went out of his way to make sure everyone was comfy. He was a highly intelligent individual. He never believed in the word impossible, if there was a way, he would find it, if there wasn't a way, he would make one. William was also one, if not the most compassionate people on the planet, he would stop traffic to save a caterpillar. He believed that every living thing was special; and so was he. The world would be a better place if more people were like him. He will be terribly missed by all the people who were lucky enough to share time with him.
William is survived by his loving wife, Arlene; a daughter, Joan A. Gilbert of Floyd; a son, William E. Gilbert of Rome; a brother, Barton Gilbert of Rome; grandchildren, Tyler J. Connolly and Jazalyn Marie Gilbert; and many great friends.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 7:00 PM, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Friday 5 to 7 PM, prior to the funeral service.
